‘Buy once, buy well’ – that’s our antidote to fast fashion. You choose the perfect swimwear, the piece that works for you. You buy one or two versatile swimsuits or bikinis that take you from your early morning lengths to your charity sea swim to lounging by the pool on holiday.

But how can you swim – and holiday – hard, exposing your swimwear to sun, sea, salt, chlorine, oils and lotions, and expect it to last? We’ve put together these top tips for maximising the life of your swimwear.

1. Rinse and repeat

As soon as you can, preferably while your swimwear is still wet, rinse it in clean, fresh water. If you have use of a private shower after your swim, take off your swimwear (it’s better for your skin to shower naked), clean yourself and rinse out your swimsuit or bikini. Otherwise, find a tap or shower after you’ve dried and dressed yourself.

Top tip: Always rinse your swimwear after wild swimming to avoid cross-contaminating bodies of water with algae or bacteria. Bring a bottle of water with you if there’s no tap or shower.

2. Machine wash chlorinated swimwear

When you get home from the pool or spa, pop your swimwear in the machine and wash at 30-40°C with your usual non-bio detergent and similar colours. If you don’t swim in chlorinated water, machine wash after every third swim. Drip dry but avoid leaving it out in direct sunlight.

Top tip: One of our guppy wash bags will protect your swimwear from snagging or getting caught in the washing machine.

3. Fix up, look sharp

If your swimwear gets damaged, you might be able to repair it. We offer a free repair service for up to 12 months after you buy your D&B swimwear regardless of fault. It might have been caught in the washing machine, brambles or your new puppy’s teeth – if we can fix it, we will. If your swimwear’s a bit older, try a local tailor or online repair service.

Top tip: When you travel away from home, pack a travel sewing kit, swimsuit patch kit, glue gun and a sarong and read this guide for making emergency swimsuit repairs.

4. Go green

While the fabric we use to make our swimsuits and bikinis is twice as durable and resistant to oils and suntan lotion, eco products are kind to the environment, your skin and your swimwear. Truly ocean-friendly and river-friendly sunscreens are available – we like this guide by the Outdoor Swimming Society.

Top tip: Where possible, shower before getting into the water.

5. Stay smooth

Not you (do whatever you like with your body hair!), but your environment. For example, if you’re sunbathing on the beach or sitting on grass, put your towel between your swimwear and the ground to avoid it snagging on anything rough.

Top tip: Put your swimwear inside a tote bag or dry bag or wrap it in your towel inside your bag to avoid it getting damaged.
