Deakin and Blue Swimwear for active swimming - How to Get Back In The Water

Has it been a while since you last went for a swim? Perhaps you haven't "swum properly" (whatever that means) since school, or you've taken a break over the summer and you're out of your routine.

Getting back in the water can be daunting if it's been a while since you were last splashing confidently, but there are some relatively straightforward tricks for helping you to build your confidence and get back in quickly. Here we share our top tips for getting in the swim.

Deakin and Blue Getting Back In The Water

1. Bring A Friend

The nervousness about getting back into swimming has lots of parts to it (we tend to find). There's not just the 'will I remember how to swim?' bit, but also the 'what will I wear?' and 'what will I do in the water for an hour?' part. Convincing a friend to come along with you not only means you'll definitely go but will also help with confidence in the water and helping you get over the initial fear of getting in. What's more you can ask a friend to watch you swim (or even record you swimming) to help you take a look at your stroke and spot areas to improve. Chances are if you haven't swum for a while, there are a few things you can brush up on and getting a friend to offer some advice will give you something to focus on and work towards.

2. Set Yourself A Challenge

It may sound a little counter-intuitive but a great way to motivate yourself back into the water is to set yourself a challenge - perhaps taking part in a swim event or booking a swim trip. Ideally the challenge would be far enough in advance to give you time to build up your confidence and fitness again without too much unnecessary pressure or stress. Alternatively an entirely personal challenge might work for you as well - see how many lengths you can swim in 30 minutes and aim to increase it week on week so that you have a regular goal that you are working towards. It will help keep you motivated, distract you from the 'what will I do in the water for an hour?' worry, and before you know it you'll be swimming away!

3. Book A Course Or Refresher Lesson

A great way to dive straight back into swimming (puns intended) is to book yourself onto a refresher course or a one-to-one swimming lesson. All local pools offer a range of swimming courses to suit different capabilities and preferences - such as adult improver courses or one to one lessons with a qualified instructor. This is a fantastic way to get immediate feedback on your swimming and pointers to work towards for next time.
